Fit Event Recap: shrINK @ Ink! {Spring ’15} Part 1

The series first launched back in March and I finally got to join in on the fun on April 11th with one of my favorite Boston trainers, Lauren Hefez.  This is my recap from the first few sessions, spoiler alert: they’ve continued it through May and today was the first time outside (another recap to come).

In collaboration with some of Boston’s popular fitness trainers, the fairly new Ink Block in the South End has been hosting a shrINK @ Ink (get it??) series for free on Saturday mornings.

ShrINK Pilates

I missed the first few sessions and have yet to work out with Eliza and Meagan but I’m big fan of Lauren so a regular routine with her on Saturday morning is a-ok with me!

Ink Block Boston is a fairly new (dog friendly) residences complex that opened up in the South End – with a whole foods right next door!

I’ve already showed my fangirl for Lauren’s workouts and events. The girl has energy. She gets the class laughing and sweating. She’ll call you out – whether it’s to wish you a happy birthday, to say she’s glad you showed up, or that your left leg that your lifting is in fact your right. It’s one of those atmospheres where you’re reminded not to take yourself too seriously, to have fun and to laugh….while shaking in plank or jumping up and down.

One of the reasons why I love Lauren’s workouts is the focus on form. For the Abs series, she’ll pause the music so we’re all listening to make sure we really get the most out of the exercise. Most of the movements are familiar and the bonus of Lauren being a youtube instructor is being able to check out the workouts and movements on your own as well.

The first session I went to there was 1 guy, smack dab in the middle …and he was no shorty. The second time there were two. Most likely with their girlfriends. The one thing I noticed though – there were some older women in the class both times which I thought was great. It’s easy to get surrounded in the basic fitness groups so to be in a mix of those sweating it out is an added bonus.

Aside from running & spin I’ve been picking up a lot of pilates and barre style workouts…especially LH’s recently. (#sweatingforthewedding #bridesmaidduties)  That said … it hasn’t gone unnoticed that she’s tricking me into push-ups and bridges.

High Energy. I’ve only been in Ink Block’s lobby as I have no business perusing the accommodations but the lobby is hip and swanky so I can only imagine.

I’d follow Lauren on Spotify. She has a mix of high energy jump & dance music along with some acoustic cool down songs. As I mentioned she paused the music for Abs but you hardly noticed as you were still running on the adrenaline  from the beginning part of class.

First time I forgot a towel. Second time I didn’t. I forgot that it’s not just Pilates and that Lauren gets your heart rate going with jumping and moving. Which you can easily tell from any of her videos.

Logo_SponsorMktg_AofW_mktggeek

This is a pretty low marketed/sponsored event – mostly which comes from Ink Block who lets the space do the marketing for them. If the class continues to go will (which I full anticipate it only growing) there’s promise of bringing the class to the space’s roof deck. Yes please! The event is also suppose to be sponsored by Milk + Honey the spa within Whole Foods which is adjacent to the apartments. I didn’t see any sort of sign of the spa….really it should be Whole Food’s juice bar that co-sponsors, as right after class there’s a line of yoga mat toting girls ordering up smoothies and juices. (I’ve tried

If they take the series to the roof deck I’ll consider that a goodie bag & a giveaway! They did have some DRINKmaple waters. I know Ink Block has a gym….I think one of their branded towels would make for a good giveaway item….especially if it goes into summer time….#justsaying

There was a giveaway for a free class/session with Lauren for a winner and 15 friends at the Ink Block gym. After the initial pickme!pickme! I wondered if I had 15 friends to invite. Then I realized this is one of the workouts that I already tell all my friends…and friends of friends. And I already had LH teach a dance class as part of a bachelorette party. So the answer was most definitely yes. However none of that mattered as I didn’t win. #whompwhomp

I’ve brought new friends to Lauren’s events, I’ve gone with mutual friends and I’ve gone solo. Given that one of my best friends is our mutual friend, obviously that’s my preferred option. I’m pretty excited that we just signed up for the rest of May. We’re taking this #SweatingfortheWedding seriously. And yes, I did get her a shirt. Luckily for her MOH I did not get us matching ones.

So now that I’ve secured my spots (selfish, I know)… you should totally sign up

Weekly Workout Recap: 4/6 – 4/12

WWR Oh boy I knew this week would be jammed packed. Not only did it have two speed works out on the original agenda (I have a hard enough time tackling 1!) but I went for Weekend Warrior status with the fitness events. {recaps to come}.  By mid-day Monday I already revised the plan – to knock out a 3.5m run and to push everything to the weekend. Monday night was too good of weather to pass up and in a mentality of just get it done, I ended up pulling one of my fastest runs in a very very long time. Since Tuesday & Wednesday weren’t such great forecasts and I had to deal with some apartment things, I decided to rest up and load up the weekend.

Plan The workouts in green are part of the Nike Running Half Marathon Training plan, the workouts in black are things I added or swapped out.

M 4/6: 3.5m Run  Hills

Tu 4/7: NTC Get Toned 3.5m Run

W 4/8: Hills Rest

Th 4/9: NTC Yoga Spin

F 4/10: Track – 5x800s 8m Run

Sa 4/11: 8m Run shrINK @ Ink Block

Su 4/12: Rest Well + Good’s #SweatSeries @Athleta

Reality

M 4/6: 3.5m (PR: fastest run in years)

Tu 4/7: WaH – SweatwithLaurenHefez

W 4/8: Rest

Th 4/9: Spin (sub)

F 4/10: 8m Run definitely a slow long run

Sa 4/11: shrINK @ Ink with Lauren Hefez + 3.59 Hill run the original Hill workout called for 1m warm-up, 2 miles up hill, 2 miles down hill. Since I was a little worried about overdoing it on the adrenal fatigue front and having my eye on Sunday’s planned track workout. I went for an in-the-middle 3.5 miles of hill-y loops. I’ll have to do another post on hills but a preview – there were definitely moments of shuffling vs. running.

Su 4/12: Barry’s Bootcamp with @Emboslice at Well+Good’s #SweatSeries @Athleta   I ended up walking home after the event because it was so gorgeous out and I’m too impatient to wait for the bus. Of course this prompted blood-sugars to drop. Planning to do the track workout in the early evening after allowing some time to recover and after a quick meeting I had….I should have known better. However, no guilt, I ended up doing some personal work while enjoying the sun from my roof-deck. I also think it was probably smarter to prevent a flare of fatigue.

Saturday Sweat & Sunday Stretch with LH

This past weekend’s workouts ended up being lead by Sweat with Lauren Hefez – a sweat session in person on Saturday and a stretch routine via video on Sunday.

I am a big groupie fan of Lauren’s workouts. And not just because I’ve been hanging out with mutual friends lately. For the past few months I’ve been trying out her differently videos when doing WaHs. Especially since there seems to be one that targets exactly what I need at that moment. (How did she know my chiropractor told me to do balancing exercises for my ankle the week she released this Improve Your Balance video ??)

If you’re Boston local, I highly suggest checking out one of her classes or keeping an eye out on upcoming events (…of course the best way is to stalk follow her on twitter) – the girl has energy! Which of course means fun. Also, I’ve been all about instructors who focus on form – after all what good is putting in the effort of an exercise if you’re not getting the benefit of it? She’s one of the few that is able to mix high energy and form focus.

Saturday I headed to the multi-weekend series shrINK @ Ink, the new apartment complex in the South End. I was too busy doing arm pulses and not checking out apartments but the lobby area we were in definitely had a cool vibe going on. In a #SweatingfortheWedding theme, LH is getting this bridesmaid and bff bride-to-be in shape! {check out her wedding/bride series here}

ShrINK Pilates

Of course with Whole Foods being right next door, that lead to post workout smoothies/juice. There’s rumor that the series might even continue into the summer….on the roof deck. Yes please!

On Sunday I needed a some sort of yoga & stretch routine and it was going to have to happen at home. And guess what happened to be recently uploaded….a new stretch routine from Lauren! I figured it was your standard routine and nothing too exciting. She managed to put little twists on your basic moves … block during forward bend? Game changer. Will definitely make this a reoccurring favorite…especially during half marathon training.

Weekly Workout Recap: 3/30 – 4/5

WWR  Not one but two social fit events this week! Plus a LH filled weekend.  That said, I totally destructed my training plan. Learning from last week I wanted to get my speedwork run in first thing so it didn’t get dropped. Plus I had a need for speed after being couched Sunday due to blood-sugars. I had tempo stuck in my mind over tackling a hill (G street may terrify me) so decided to go for that.

Plan  The workouts in green are part of the Nike Running Half Marathon Training plan, the workouts in black are things I added or swapped out.

Weekly Workout Recap: 2/16 -2/22

WWR  This week had a few things throwing it off the normal routine – I had Monday off for MLK and headed home to Southampton for my high school bestie’s bridal shower. Given that said friend introduced me to Lauren Hefez‘s workouts and I was going to spend the weekend with mutual friends, I themed my Workout-at-Homes (#WaH) around her videos. I started with the Barre video but after trying it without weights for a few minutes I decided to shelf it for later when I had mine….which ended up being Sunday. I had packed my sneakers and lots of layers, as the forecast was to be in the 30s and sunny – just enough to get me outside. Only it ended up snowing both days and being in the 20s. #runningintentions
